Concerning the grit size of Wet or Dry abrasive paper (silicon carbide) I do not think that !000/2000 is the size grit, ment for polishing under paint coats. 1000/2000 is used for polishing mirrors. Automotive paints will easily cover the scratches from even a #320 grit. The common used grit for sanding bare metal prior to painting is #320. To smooth a base coat and to help in bonding another coat to it, I would use either #400 or #600.
